Yoga reveals and heals.
A holistic practice that reveals what’s true and what’s not true about you. More than a physical exercise, it is a transformative practice for your body, mind and soul. If you allow it to be that for you.
But it took many years for my relationship with yoga to grow, evolve, and allow its healing benefits to transform me.
When a friend of mine told me about yoga in 2005 and how she thought I would be in to it, I was resistant. I was unsure about yoga because I didn’t know how/if it would align with my spiritual beliefs at the time. Did I have to worship hindu gods to practice? Was yoga “of God”? Why did people practice yoga? What would be the benefits to my life?
At that same time, I met a new friend who was a yoga teacher. Through her, I began to understand the benefits to the body, which intrigued me, so one day I went to one of her Restorative Yoga classes. The “Om” sound we chanted was foreign to me and I felt uncomfortable chanting something I didn’t know the meaning of. But the yoga poses felt so delicious in my body and I left feeling content and relaxed.
Fast forward to 2009 and I started to practice yoga at a local gym. It began as a physical exercise for me. Over the course of a few months, I began to connect to my body like I never had before. I felt stronger in my body and was developing a greater awareness of my breathing and my posture.
But I found that there was no way for me to "separate" my heart, soul and mind from my body. Naturally, my heart and intention going into each class was to connect deeper with myself and God. I began to see how it was a holistic practice that felt nourishing and supportive to my body, mind, and my soul.
I was beginning to learn that yoga was really about you getting to know your true self. It was about connecting more with your own body, the thoughts that lead your life, and what nourishes your soul. It actually aligned beautifully with my beliefs about God.
Jesus said to "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength. Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” ~ Luke 10:27 (NIV)
This practice enhances my love of my whole self. My love of God. And when I practice yoga, I feel more connected and loving to my neighbor. It actually takes me deeper into my connection to my Creator. It takes me out of the mind and into my body where I experience the tenderness, grace, and compassion of God.
I began to shift my diet, look more at my thoughts and emotions, and had an enhanced desire to share with others this yoga I was getting to know.
Thus began my journey to become a holistic health counselor and a yoga teacher. In 2010 I trained at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in a Certified Holistic Health Counselor program, which was life-changing! Then, in 2012, I dove into YogaFit trainings so I could become certified to teach basic yoga classes. I began to volunteer teach for staff at a local non-profit that served battered and abused women and teach at a fitness studio.
When I moved to Teton Valley Idaho in 2013, I met Sundari Lucey, owner of the local yoga studio and Its Only a Dance yoga school. She invited me to teach at the studio and thus continued my sharing of yoga. In 2014-2015, she offered a 200 hour teacher certification, which I dove into with such passion and fervor to get to know on a deeper level this yoga I loved and how to best guide others in its benefits. The desire to keep immersing myself in yoga continued into a 300 hour Advanced Teacher Training the last two years that completed on September 24, 2017 in culmination of 500 hours! I feel so grateful to have been apart of a group of women who love yoga as much I do. :) Here's a pic from our graduation weekend:
It’s no accident that this container of training held the space of my life the last three years as I navigated moving to a new state, going through a divorce, shifting careers, illness, hormonal imbalances and complete burnout. Yoga supported me in all of these transitions to provide self-nourishment, support my healing, rebalance my hormones, and to learn to truly love myself more, not less, when emotional and physical pain arises.
Yoga is a practice that asks the question: “Who am I?” Who am I really? Not who my parents, society, or religion told me who I should be. Who are you really when all of that falls off of you and what is revealed under those layers of programming?

Needless to say, the resistance I had initially to this yoga practice have fallen away.
